Taper Roller Bearing Adjustment and Preload for Wheel Hubs
A tapered roller bearing must be set for the hub design; over-tight and loose settings can both create problems.
This guide is for identifying questions to check. Follow the machine or component maker’s specifications for selection, fitting and maintenance.
What bearing setting means
For a mounted tapered roller bearing pair, setting refers to axial end play or preload. The correct value is specific to the hub and its operating conditions. Tightening until the wheel feels right is not a reliable specification.
Before adjustment
Identify both cup and cone references, inspect the hub and spindle, and check the seal and lubricant. Replace damaged components as the equipment maker directs. Keep dirt out during assembly and use the specified lubricant.
During assembly
Seat the components and adjust using the hub or equipment maker’s procedure, torque values and measurement method. Rotate the hub as directed during setting, then verify the specified end play or preload with the proper measuring tool. Recheck after securing the adjustment hardware.
When to ask for help
If the hub runs hot, has visible wobble or repeatedly loosens, stop and investigate the fit, setting, lubrication and component condition. A bearing-number match alone does not solve an assembly problem.
